Newark School Board Declines To Extend Superintendent’s Contract

The board voted against granting León a new, two-year extension.

NEWARK, NJ — The Newark Board of Education declined to extend Superintendent Roger León’s contract last week.

The board voted against granting León a new, two-year extension at their Sept. 25 meeting. It would have replaced his existing contract, which expires in June 2028. The vote was 4-0, with two abstentions, two recusals and one absence., NJ Advance Media reported.

The proposed contract would have replaced the five-year, $1.5 million deal that was automatically renewed in 2022, TAPinto Newark reported.

The vote doesn't necessarily mean an extension is off the table, and the board may revisit the issue at a later date, Chalkbeat Newark reported.
