As temperatures drop across New Jersey, your heating system and appliances are working overtime. Whether you rely on a gas fireplace, boiler or furnace, winter is the season where small issues can turn into big problems. The good news is a few simple checks can help you stay safe, save energy and avoid emergency repair calls.
“A few proactive steps can make all the difference during heating season,” said Brian Clark, senior vice president of Gas Operations at PSE&G. “By preparing now, customers can stay safe, avoid costly repairs and enjoy peace of mind all winter long.”
Here are five winter prep tips to keep your home running smoothly:
1. Change your HVAC filter regularly
A clogged filter strains your heating furnace and reduces airflow, making your home feel colder. Replacing it improves efficiency and helps prevent breakdowns. If you’re overdue, now’s the time!
2. Check your water heater
Cold showers in winter? No thanks. If your water heater is old or underperforming, consider replacing it before it fails. Newer models are more efficient and reliable – especially when temperatures begin to drop. PSE&G’s trusted team of WorryFree technicians can help you choose and install the right water heater for your home.
3. Clear snow from furnace vents
Blocked furnace exhaust pipes can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide build up. After every snowfall, check and clear your furnace vents, chimneys and gas boiler outlets. It’s a quick fix that protects your family and your heating system.
4. Check your thermostat settings
No heat? Before calling for service, check that your thermostat is set to “heat” and the temperature is turned up. Still having trouble? Schedule a free estimate! PSE&G’s trusted WorryFree technicians can help repair or replace your unit before the cold worsens.
5. Clean your dryer vent
Lint build up is a fire hazard, especially in the winter when drying heavier clothes and bedding. Clear your dryer vents and consider scheduling an appliance repair if you notice your dryer isn’t getting hot.

Important safety reminders year-round
If you smell gas, act fast:
- Leave the building as quickly as possible and move 350 feet away from the structure. Take all others with you. If you smell gas outside, move away from where you suspect the gas is leaking.
- Call 911 immediately and call PSE&G at 1-800-880-PSEG (7734). (Do NOT call from inside the building. Wait until you are outside and a safe distance to call.)
- Learn more about carbon monoxide poisoning and how to keep your home safe from it.

*PSE&G WorryFree Services are only available to customers located in PSE&G’s service territory. Similar services can be provided by service companies other than PSE&G. A list of those service companies may be available from public listings, including telephone directories. Customers are not required to purchase WorryFree Services to receive safe, adequate and proper utility service or to take part in utility energy efficiency programs. WorryFree Plans do not provide for gas emergency service. If you detect a gas odor, have a gas appliance that will not shut off, or have a carbon monoxide concern, contact your local gas utility. PSE&G will provide to its gas customers, free of charge, such services as gas leak investigations and other safety-related services.
