Payne Funeral, Public Viewing Scheduled

Funeral arrangements have been announced for Donald Payne, the longtime congressman who died Tuesday at the age of 77.

Payne’s body will lie in state at the Essex County Courthouse, 465 Martin Luther King Boulevard, Newark, from 1 pm Monday, March 12 to 8 am Tuesday, March 13. The viewing will be open to the public.

There will be another public viewing at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 149 Springfield Ave., Newark, from 4 to 9 pm Tuesday.

The funeral for Payne - the state’s first African-American member of Congress -- will be held 11 am Wednesday, to be followed by his burial at Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield.
