PETA Gives Booker Box of Thank-You Chocolates for Dog Rescue

Mayor Cory Booker’s recent intervention on behalf of a freezing dog has earned him the gratitude of animal lovers within the city and beyond—including from PETA, the animal-rights activist group.

On the evening of Jan. 24, Booker, responding to a tweet by a Channel 7 Eyewitness News reporter, rushed to a Newark home where “Cha Cha” had been left outside in bitterly cold temperatures. The 43-year-old mayor and likely candidate for U.S. Senate brought the dog to a waiting police car and conacted its owner.

As a thank-you, PETA announced Tuesday it was sending Booker, a vegetarian, a box of vegan chocolates and a PETA tie. The group has also offered to spay Cha Cha for free
 
"Mayor Booker's efforts to protect all of his city's residents—human and nonhuman alike—set an example of kindness for the whole country," PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said in a statement.

"PETA cautions animal guardians in New Jersey and elsewhere to keep their furry companions indoors when cold weather hits—and to prevent future hardship by always spaying and neutering," she added.
