Police Seize $25K in Heroin, Make Arrest

Undercover operation focused on public housing complex

An undercover operation at a public housing complex Tuesday resulted in the seizure of 2,500 decks of heroin and the arrest of one man, Newark police spokesman Det. Todd McClendon said.

Police were staking out the Terrell Homes on Riverview Terrace around 11 am when they saw Shaquan Huey, 37, of Newark receive two large bundles from a second man while a third man served as a lookout, McClendon said.

The three men ran when police moved in, with Huey arrested after a brief foot chase. The two other men escaped, McClendon said.

Huey has been charged with conspiracy and several drug offenses, including intent to distribute. The heroin Huey allegedly received has a street value of $25,000, McClendon said.

"I commend our undercover officers for a difficult job well done. Their dedicated efforts have resulted in another significant narcotics seizure which ultimately sends a message to the narcotics dealers and the residents of the complex, that we will not tolerate these types of open air narcotics activities, said Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio.
