Protest Planned In Newark Against Loss Of SNAP Benefits, 'Profit And Imperialism'

An emergency rally to protest an upcoming suspension of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is planned for Newark on Saturday.

NEWARK, NJ -- An emergency rally to protest an upcoming suspension of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is scheduled to take place in Newark on Saturday, Nov. 1.

According to a post from organizers, the rally will take place at 3:30 p.m. outside Newark City Hall, 920 Broad Street.

“Let’s stand in the streets and organize together to fight against Trump’s billionaire agenda that puts profit and imperialism before the needs of the people,” the post says.

The USDA has confirmed it will suspend SNAP payments beginning Nov. 1 because of the ongoing government shutdown.

There were 812,966 people receiving SNAP benefits in New Jersey as of August, representing 436,452 households; 340,425 children, and 176,706 elderly individuals, according to a lawsuit filed by multiple states.
