Public Service Loan Forgiveness Deadline Is Near, NJ Congressman Says

U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr. (NJ-10) hosted a webinar about potential debt relief for people working in a "low-paying public service job."

NEW JERSEY — Some of America’s most essential employees are working in a “low-paying public service job.” But there may be some financial relief they can take advantage of, a New Jersey congressman says.

On Tuesday evening, U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr. (NJ-10) hosted a live webinar with Maisha Challenger of the U.S. Department of Education. The topic? A quickly approaching deadline for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).

Here’s how Payne’s office described the webinar in a news release:

“With the deadline for the PSLF program fast approaching, (October 31), this webinar will inform attendees about the fundamentals of the PSLF program. It will detail who qualifies for PSLF, current loans that are eligible for relief/forgiveness and information about refunds for past payments. Under President [Joe] Biden’s leadership, the PSLF will finally be able to provide debt relief to the teachers, nurses, and firefighters essential to our nation’s success. This program will provide much needed relief to those who serve and have served the federal, state, and local government, and those across America’s nonprofit sector, for at least 10 years. By cancelling these loans, PSLF will effectively remove the burden of student debt, making it possible for many borrowers to stay in their jobs in high-need fields.”

“An advanced degree frequently saddles students with debilitating debt, which effectively prevents borrowers from accepting or staying in low-paying public service jobs,” Payne said.

“The PSLF program lowers the primary barrier of student loan debt, which will help new graduates pursue more careers in public service,” he added.
