Rt. 21 Exit to be Closed Next Week

Sinkhole Forms after Pipe Collapse

The Exit 6 ramp on the northbound side of Rt. 21 will be closed part of the day every weekday next week for a repair project, the state Department of Transportation has announced. Located in Belleville, the exit leads to Belleville Turnpike/Rutgers Street. Motorists will be directed to Exit 8/Park Avenue further north.

The ramp will be closed daily between 9 am and 3 pm, from Monday, April 2 to Friday, April 6.

A sinkhole formed March 7 on Rt. 21 South when an underground storm pipe collapsed. The ramp will be closed as workers replace the pipe. The center lane on the southbound side of 21 will also be closed 9 am to 3 pm next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, but the left lane will remain open.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.  Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
