Some Newark Bus Routes to be Cut

78 to Secaucus spared following testimony from riders

The board of directors of NJ Transit has announced that a number of bus routes operating in Newark and elsewhere in New Jersey will be discontinued, but the agency also said alternatives exist for affected riders.

The changes are part of the agency’s Bus Service Optimization effort and take effect Sept. 1. The plan is intended to save money on routes where ridership is well below average and reinvest the savings elsewhere in the system, the agency said in a statement.

In Newark, service will be discontinued along the following routes: 42 (18th Avenue), 43 (Jersey City), 75 (Butler) and 93 (Bloomfield-Newark Light Rail). Along the 258 route between Bloomfield and Newark Liberty International Airport, the University Heights Branch will be eliminated. However, several alternatives within walking distance of the area will remain.

Under the plan, the 78 route to Secaucus was originally slated to be eliminated, but the agency has decided to retain it after hearing from riders.
