UPDATED March 28
The city will share part of nearly $80 million in state Department of Transportation grants set aside for New Jersey communities to repair local streets, the agency announced yesterday.
Newark, which sought $1.75 million through the 2012 Municipal Aid Grant program, received a $1.35 million local aid grant, state and city officials confirmed.
Two streets in each of the city's five wards will be repaired using the grant money, according to a fact sheet released by the city today. The roadwork will begin next year, city officials said in a statement.
Newark officials said the following streets will be repaved with the funding: S. 19th Street from 18th Avenue to 14th Avenue; 17th Avenue East from Irvine Turner Boulevard to Bergen Street; Ferry Street from Lentz Avenue to Blanchard Street; Mulberry Street from Raymond Boulevard to Market Street; Beaumont Avenue from Grafton Avenue to Verona Avenue; Degraw Avenue from Grafton Avenue to Verona Avenue; Madison Avenue between Clinton and Tracy avenues; S. 19th Street from Springfield Avenue to 18th Avenue; N. 6th Street from West Market Street to Orange Street; and S. 13th Street from Central to Gould avenues.
All of Essex County’s 22 municipalities received local aid grant money, totalling $6.7 million. Across the state, 387 local aid grants were awarded, with 374 of 661 grant applications -- 57 percent of the total -- approved.
The grant award for Newark, the state’s largest city, was the highest awarded to any municipality, some of which received grants for less than $30,000. Jersey City, with a $1.198 million grant award, received the second largest amount.
