Students Take a 'Starry' Tour Through Newark Museum

Students from St. Benedict’s and other city high schools last week met with African artist Romuland Hazoume at the Newark Museum, where he had just installed his latest work,”Rainbow Serpent,” a 12-foot sculpture made of jerrycans. Students were also treated to a tour of “African Cosmos,” an exhibit now at the museum focusing on African works with a celestial theme. Dr. Christine Kreamer, of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art, led the tour.

Students also received hands-on lessons in African crafts, including making prints incorporating “adinkra” designs. Adinkra symbols, which were developed in Ghana and elsewhere in West Africa, represent abstract concepts like wisdom, peace and justice.
