Suspect Shot By Newark Police Officer in Critical Condition
An unidentified suspect is in critical condition at University Hospital after being shot by a Newark Police officer last night in Newark.

An unidentified suspect is in critical condition at University Hospital after being shot by a Newark Police Officer in Newark last night.
The suspect was shot once by a veteran police officer in the area of 163 South 6th Street during a struggle with officers. A weapon was recovered.
Newark Police attempted to stop and interview the suspect last night at South 9th Street and South Orange Ave. Upon being stopped by police, the suspect attempted to leave by entering a taxi cab, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray said in a statement today.

After Newark Police pulled the cab over, the suspect “bolted from the cab” and officers followed in a foot pursuit. Shortly thereafter, the suspect was apprehended and shot by the Newark Police Officer.
Following the shooting, the Officer was taken to the hospital for observation. He has since been released. At this time, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is not releasing the name of the Officer involved in the shooting.

“Whenever there is a police-involved shooting, the investigation is immediately turned over to the County Prosecutor’s Office for review. This is routine and is done in every such shooting to assure that all protocols were followed,” said Newark Police Director Venable. “As such, I await the outcome of their query before I comment any further on this matter.”
