The Week Ahead in Newark: A Kosher Cook-Off and Soccer's World Cup Trophy Comes to Town
What's going on in the city this week

On Monday, professional soccer’s most coveted piece of hardware, the 2014 FIFA World Cup Trophy, will be brought to Riverfront Park on Brill Street, where members of the public can have their picture taken with the prize. The festivities start at 4 pm. (EDITOR'S NOTE - THIS EVENT HAS BEEN MOVED TO 700 RAYMOND BOULEVARD AT 4 PM)
On Tuesday at 6 pm at city hall, there will be a meeting to discuss the environmental justice consequences of a plan to raise the Bayonne Bridge. Raising the bridge will allow for larger ships to enter Port Newark, but some fear increased truck traffic will worsen Newark’s already poor air quality, which has been linked to the city’s abnormally high childhood-asthma rate.
Just in time for Passover, Manischewitz, the kosher-food company, will be hosting its seventh-annual Man-O-Manischewitz cooking competition Thursday at the company’s Newark headquarters. Thursday’s competitors submitted kosher recipes, which they will prepare and be judged on during the event.
On Thursday, students from Weequahic High will join hundreds of other youth from across the state for a beach cleanup at Asbury Park, part of the fifth annual Clean Communities Environmental Student Exchange. Following the cleanup, the students will attend a lunch and talk about environmental issues.
