Essex County sheriff’s officers arrested two city residents on drug charges yesterday, the office said in a statement.
The first arrest occurred late in the afternoon as officers were on quality of life patrols near Delavan Avenue and Seabury Street, where they observed a 2011 Dodge Avenger stop in the middle of an intersection. Several men approached the vehicle but fled when Officers Ryan Udvarhely and Dominic Petrucci approached.
The driver, Abdul Jones, 26, of Trinton Terrace, allegedly tried to run from the scene after the officers ordered him to shut the car off and exit. He was immediately tackled to the ground and found to be in possession of 34 bags of crack cocaine. A records check also revealed that Jones had outstanding Newark and Superior Court warrants against him.
Jones was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession with intent to distribute, possession with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public housing complex, possession in a motor vehicle and resisting arrest. Jones was also issued motor vehicle summonses for a lapsed inspection sticker, unsafe driving and other violations. He is being held at the Essex County Correctional facility on $50,000 bail.
Later yesterday, at 11:20 pm, Officers Giuseppe Forgione and David Cohen were on patrol last night when they observed a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo occupied by four people parked at the intersection of South 11th Street and 9th Avenue.
The vehicle’s windows were fogged up and the officers could detect the odor of smoked marijuana emanating from the vehicle, according to Sheriff Armando Fontoura.
When officers questioned the occupants, a passenger, Shameerah Brown, 20, of South 11th Street, allegedly admitted she had drugs in her purse. Officers allegedly found 24 and a half Ecstasy tablets and 13 bags of marijuana. Brown was also wanted on a Newark warrant.
Brown was placed under arrest and charged with two counts each of possession, possession with intent to distribute and possession with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of a school, Roseville Avenue. Her bail was set at $35,000.
