Upgrades To Newark High School Football Field Reach The End Zone

The sports stadium at Malcolm X Shabazz High School in Newark now has a new synthetic turf field and track.

NEWARK, NJ — A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated football field and stadium at Malcolm X Shabazz High School in Newark included a big round of applause for the New York Giants and the NFL, who helped to finance the project.

The Newark Public School District received a $250,000 grant from the Giants through the National Football League Foundation Grassroots Program, in partnership with the Greater Newark Local Initiative Support Corporation.

Work included the installation of a new synthetic turf field and track at Malcolm X Shabazz/South Side High School Stadium.

The “state-of-the-art facility” was built by the collective efforts of CTS Design Group, Suburban Design and the Land-Tek Group, who partnered with staff from the Newark Public School District on the project.

“This grant from the New York Giants through the NFL Foundation Grassroots Program will provide endless opportunities for our students to learn, grow, and thrive through athletics and recreation,” Superintendent Roger León said.

“The stadium and field have always been a staple in our community – receiving brand-new turf will make a difference like no other,” León added.

“While the work we do in every school is important to me, this project in the South Ward – where I was born – gives me great joy,” Newark Board of Education President Hasani Council said.
