County's 200 Club bestows Valor Awards last week
The 200 Club of Essex County, an organization that raises funds for the families of first-responders killed in the line of duty, on May 9 presented firefighters, police officers and other public workers with awards for acts of exemplary courage performed during 2012.
The city of Newark was well represented. Several firefighters and police were honored collectively for their efforts during Hurricane Sandy, when much of the East Ward was flooded by the Passaic River while other emergencies -- from fires caused by downed transformers to people trapped in elevators -- were occurring in every corner of the darkened city.
Also honored was a Newark police officer who continued to chase down a fleeing suspect even after his patrol car was totalled in a head-on collision, another police officer who disrupted an armed robbery attempt and a Newark fire captain who, while off-duty, rushed into a burning building without safety gear and escorted several residents to safety.
