What's Open, Closed In Newark On Thanksgiving 2021
The Thanksgiving holiday means most government offices, stores and coronavirus testing sites will be closed in Newark in 2021.
NEWARK, NJ — The Thanksgiving holiday will mean widespread closures affecting most businesses and government operations. But there will be a few important services will be available.
Here's what's open and closed in Newark on Thanksgiving 2021:
Fire & police departments: Newark police, fire, and other uniformed emergency services will be unaffected by the Thanksgiving holiday.

Fast food: Chains like McDonald's, Dunkin', Starbucks and Subway might be open, but hours may vary from store to store.
Government: City Hall, schools and the library are closed.

Grocery stores: It'll be hit-or-miss, but Whole Foods in Newark will be open 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving. ShopRite in Newark will be closed Thursday but reopens at 7 a.m. Friday.
Retail stores: It'll be hit-or-miss, but some national chains like CVS, Walgreens, Family Dollar and Rite Aid may be open. Call ahead.
DMV: All offices will be closed on Thanksgiving.
Trash pickup: Curbside trash, street sweeping, and recycling collection will not be made on Thursday, Nov. 25, or Friday, Nov. 26. Municipal garbage and paper recycling collection will resume in Zone A on Monday, Nov. 29. It will resume in Zone B on Tuesday morning, Nov. 30. Residents must place their refuse at their curbs on those days, and pick-ups will be made as regularly scheduled.
Health Department: Department of Health and Community Wellness and Mary Eliza Mahoney Health Center will be closed on Thursday and Friday, including the Bureau of Vital Statistics, COVID-19 vaccine and testing services, immunization, Lead Clinic, and WIC. Residents will not be able to apply for permits, birth certificates, name-change certificates, marriage licenses, nor pay water or tax bills at City Hall.
Municipal Court: Court will also be closed on Thursday, Nov. 25, and on Friday, Nov. 26. However, a judge will be available to preside over bail hearings for defendants in custody, on Friday, November 26. Residents can make payments on parking and traffic tickets through the website www.njmcdirect.com. To utilize this website, residents will need their summons number, including the prefix, and the City of Newark’s court code, which is 0714.
Parking: Alternate side of the street parking is suspended on Thanksgiving.
U.S. Postal Service: Mail service will not run on Thanksgiving.
