Young Children Taken by Carjacker Found Safe

Mother was forced from parked vehicle Thursday

An infant and a toddler who were still inside a vehicle taken by a carjacker Thursday night were found unharmed shortly afterwards, Newark police said.

A woman was sitting in her parked Nissan Pathfinder on the 700 block of S. 17th Street shortly before 8 p.m. when she was forced out of the vehicle by a man. Her two children, an 11-month-old and a 3-year-old, were still sitting in the vehicle when the man entered and sped off.

A description of the suspect was not immediately available, police said.

An Essex County Sheriff’s Officer located the vehicle shortly afterwards a few blocks away, in front of 532 S.19th Street. The children were unharmed and were reunited with their mother, police said.

Police are working to identify the suspect.
