City Man Arrested in North Brunswick Fatal Accident

A 22-year-old Somerset man was killed in the Jersey Avenue crash on Saturday night.

A New Brunswick man was arrested after allegedly being involved in a number of car accidents in one night, one of which was fatal, police said.

According to a press release from the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office, Shareef Holder, 28, of New Brunswick, was traveling quickly in a 2001 Mercedes ML 320 on Jersey Avenue near Huron Road in North Brunswick at 9:53 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 when he allegedly crashed into the back of a 1995 Honda Civic, driven by Luis Rodriguez. 

After hitting the civic, Holder then crashed into a 2003 GMC Sierra pickup truck that was in front of the Honda, and then hit a 2003 Chevrolet Ventura that was in front of the pickup truck, according to the release. The passengers in those vehicles were not injured, the release said.

Prior to hitting Rodriguez's car, Holder allegedly also hit a 1985 Nissan Maxima on Route 27 in New Brunswick and drove away from the scene. The driver of the Maxima was not hurt.

Police spotted Holder and stopped him on Jersey Avenue, but Holder fled from police and soon after hit Rodriguez's car, according to the release.

Rodriguez, 22, of the Somerset section of Franklin Township was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.

Holder was arrested and has been charged with aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide and eluding police, according to the release.

He is jailed on $1 million bail, according to the Prosecutor's Office.
