City Settles Lawsuit with RU Students Who Claimed Police Brutality

Jake Kostman and Kareem Najjar filed a lawsuit against the New Brunswick Police Department and Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office in 2010, alleging that they were beaten and verbally harassed by officers in their city apartment.

Two men have settled a federal lawsuit against the New Brunswick Police Department and Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office, accepting a $120,000 settlement in a case in which they claimed they were victims of police brutality in 2010.

According to a report on NJ.com, Jake Kostman and Kareem Najjar were Rutgers University students when plainclothes officers broke down the door of the Somerset Street apartment on Dec. 10, 2010.

According to the report, both men claimed being handcuffed and beaten, and called "a slur against homosexuals" while their apartment was searched, the report said.

Neither of the men were arrested, the report said.
