Dance for the Dead: Dia de los Muertos at the Library
Dia de los Muertos is celebrated annually from Oct. 31-Nov. 2.
The New Brunswick Free Public Library and Lazos America Unida held a two-day Dia de los Muertos cultural celebration last week with dancing, sugar skulls and hundreds of fragrant marigolds.
Dia de los Muertos is an annual celebration rooted in Mexican culture in which deceased loved ones are fondly remembered.
To celebrate, the library and Lazos constructed an altar in the library's community room, covered with flowers. 50 people came by on October 31 to create sugar skulls and paper flowers.
On Nov. 2, the two groups a full celebration. Guests watched performances by the Kalpulli Huehuetlahtolli Aztec Dancers and dined on bread, tamales and Champurraddo, a traditional Mexican chocolate drink.
