Get a Glimpse into Teaching Through New 24-Hour Course at MCC

"Pathways to Teaching" is a three-step program for mid-career professionals who are interested in switching to teaching.

Middlesex County College has announced a new 24-hour teaching course meant to give those interested in becoming a teacher a streamlined first look into the profession.

The "New Pathways to Teaching" program begins with the "Introduction to the Teaching Profession: 24-Hour Program" that takes place from 6-10 p.m. on Tuesdays in November and December, according to a press release from the college.

The cost to enroll is $200.

Following the 24-hour course, students with a 2.75 grade point average in an undergraduate or graduate degree and a Certificate of Eligibility gained from the completion of the course may move on to a 12-session course that includes teaching observations.

To move on to the third step in the program, students must be offered a job by a school district and teach during the academic year while attending class at Middlesex County College once a week, according to the school.

At the completion of the program, successful students will have their teaching certificate.

The intro course is most often utilized by adults who are in other careers but have interest in switching to teaching, according to the school.

“Some have always wanted to teach but, for one reason or another, have not had the opportunity," said Kimberlee Hooper, director of the Office of School Relations. "Others may have developed this interest in teaching later in life, as they are looking for a more meaningful career helping others. Whatever their motivation, New Pathways is the program that can help them fulfill their dream."

Schools are the most interested in candidates wishing to teach math, physics and biology, Hooper said.

Students in the program may also earn up to 15 credits toward a master's degree at New Jersey City University, according to the school.
