Near Enemy Returns to New Brunswick

The festival screens independent films featuring fight choreography and martial arts.

Fists flew Saturday night at the George Street Playhouse.

The Near Enemy Film Festival, now in its second year, returned to the playhouse to screen a dozen short films featuring martial arts and fight choreography.

It is organized by Morristown-based company Near Enemy Creative.

Festival co-founder and director Cara Parmigiani said this year's offerings included films from Brazil - "O Amuleto Do Dragano", which took the title of Best in Show and an animated short from Iran titled "Return".

The festival kicked off with a Haganah demonstration from Rockaway Fight Center instructor Sam De Jesus. Parmigiani is also a Dan Zan Ryu Ju Jitsu instructor at the Rockaway martial arts school.

Parmigiani said the festival is always on the lookout for more submissions from filmmakers of any skill level.

"If it (meets) our guidelines, it has a chance," she said.
