A woman was killed Wednesday night while trying to cross Route 1 on foot.

A pedestrian was killed Wednesday night on Route 1 South, police say.
Sandra Lemay-Callahan was attempting to cross Route 1 on foot around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday when she was struck by a vehicle near the Route 18 S. ramp that merges onto Route 1 S., according to a press release from the New Brunswick Police Department.
She was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and pronounced dead at approximately 10:18 p.m., according to the release.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. No charges have been filed as of yet, according to the release.
The accident was one of two fatal auto incidents in the area of Route 1 S. on Wednesday night, the other being a three-car crash on Ryders Lane in East Brunswick that resulted in the death of an 83-year-old Monroe woman.
Traffic became thick throughout the area, spilling into Highland Park and Edison as police investigated.
Anyone with information on the Route 1 accident is asked to contact officer Pat Buckelew at (732) 745-5005.
