Piscataway Woman Charged With Leaving Scene Of Fatal Car Accident

Police say she hit a woman with her car in Plainfield on August 30, killing the woman, and fled. She did not stop or call 911, say police.

PLAINFIELD, NJ — A Piscataway woman was arrested and charged for fleeing the scene of a fatal accident, Union County Prosecutor William Daniel and Plainfield Police Director James Abney announced Monday.

Shernice Benbow, 62, was arrested Thursday and charged with second-degree leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, and third-degree endangering an injured victim.

Police say she struck a woman with her car on August 30, 2024: Plainfield Police responded to the 400 block of East Front Street in that town for a 911 call of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, they found the victim, Jennifer Harris, 67. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

On March 20, Benbow was arrested and processed without incident.

"While this arrest does not bring Ms. Harris back, we hope it brings some solace to her loved ones. I commend the dedicated efforts of investigators from the Union County Prosecutor’s Office and the Plainfield Police Department, who worked tirelessly on this case," said the Union County Prosecutor.

“I am hoping that this arrest will begin the healing process for the Harris family. I commend the hard work of the Plainfield Police Department and the Union County Prosecutor’s Office regarding this tragic loss of life," said Abney.
