Rabid Raccoon Found In New Brunswick

It had a clash last Thursday with a dog, and the dog and its owner are now both considered exposed to the rabies virus.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — A rabid raccoon was found last Thursday in New Brunswick, announced the Middlesex County Office of Health Services.

The raccoon was found last Thursday (May 29) in the vicinity of Townsend Street and Throop Avenue. It had a clash with a dog and the dog's owner called New Brunswick Animal Control, reporting that the raccoon appeared sick.

The raccoon was picked up and tested at a state lab. On Monday, the results came back positive for rabies.

The dog and its owner are now both considered exposed to the rabies virus, and must consult with their doctor and veterinarian to take preventive shots, said county health officials.

This is the third rabid animal found in Middlesex County so far in 2025.
