Woman Hit, Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver In New Brunswick: Police
Police say a North Brunswick man hit the woman, killing her, with his pick-up at 10:41 p.m. Saturday, and then fled.
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — A woman was killed in a hit and run Saturday in New Brunswick, and a North Brunswick man has been criminally charged with causing her death, said Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and New Brunswick Police Chief Vincent Sabo.
The woman was hit by the car at 10:41 p.m. Saturday: New Brunswick Police responded to the intersection of Lee and Suydam streets for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
Authorities located Elvia Gavarrete, 48, of New Brunswick, who sustained serious injuries. She was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police determine a pick-up truck driven by Juan Martinez-Gaspar, 41, of North Brunswick, struck the woman at that intersection and then fled. Police later located a pick-up truck with damage consistent with a pedestrian crash. Martinez-Gaspar was subsequently arrested without incident and charged with second-degree leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
This investigation was done by New Brunswick Police Officer Mark Smith and Detective Shadi Zaiton of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. Anyone with information or surveillance footage of the area is asked to call Officer Smith at 732-745-5005 or Det. Zaiton at 732-745-4263.
