5 Things to Do This Weekend

A documentary about portraitist Alice Neel, craft shows, and a rare chance to enjoy the Palisades.

Here are five events to help plan your weekend:

  • WhatAlice Neel:  A Documentary Movie
  • Where: The Art Center of Northern New Jersey, 250 Center St. New Milford
  • When: Fri. Oct. 14, 7:30 p.m.
  • Why:  Documentary profiles Alice Neel, one of the 20th century’s best portrait artists, and uses interviews, photos and art to detail her struggles as a painter and single mother. Alice, who died in 1984, sparked a revival of the genre by producing portraits that unmasked her subjects, who included Andy Warhol, poet Allen Ginsberg and other notables. 
  • Cost: $10 suggested donation
  • WhatIndian Summer Fest
  • Where: South Presbyterian Church, 150 W Church Street, Bergenfield
  • When: Sat. Oct. 15, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.
  • Why: Music, food, crafts, shopping, kids games & the NEW build your own Scarecrow Extravaganza
  • Cost: $2
  • WhatOktoberfest Craft Show at the Duck Pond
  • Where: Demarest Duck Pond, Hardenburgh Avenue, Demarest
  • When: Sat. Oct. 15, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.
  • Why: Excellent handmade crafts for sale, German and Korean food, canoes, inflatable rides, etc.
  • Cost: Free admission
  • What: Tenafly Arts & Crafts Autumn Leaves Fest
  • Where: Washington St. and the park at the Railroad Station, Tenafly
  • When: Sat. Oct. 15, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m.
  • Why: Arts and Crafts, food exhibitors and light music. There will also be a separate Boutique Section with juried exhibits selling upscale retail items. 
  • Cost: Free admission
  • What: Greenbrook Sanctuary Open House
  • Where: Greenbrook Sanctuary (entrance off U.S. Route 9W in Tenafly)
  • When: Sun. Oct. 16, 12 p.m.- 4 p.m.
  • Why: This pristine nature center on the Palisades is for members only and only opens its gates twice a year for people to come explore and consider joining as a member. This is the Palisades like you've never seen it. Members get their own key to access park. 
  • Cost: Free
