New Milford Celebrates Veteran's Day

Ceremony begins at 11 a.m. in front of borough hall

Friday, Nov. 11, we celebrate Veteran's Day, a national holiday dedicated to pay tribute to our military personnel serving or who have served in armed conflicts.

In honor of this day, the New Milford Public Events Committee will be holding their annual Veteran’s Day Ceremony today at 11 a.m. at the Veteran’s monument in front of Borough Hall.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend as honor is paid to all of New Milford’s veterans. The Mayor and Council will be presenting veterans with a citation commending their service.

All veterans should stop by town hall after the ceremony and pick up the citations that the Public Events Committee has worked hard to prepare as a way of thanking all of you for your service.

Veteran's Day, originally called Armistice Day, marks the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.

President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed an Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. In proclaiming the holiday he said,

"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."

In 1954, Congress amended the law replacing "Armistice" with "Veteran's," and it has been know as Veteran's Day ever since.
