Volunteers are needed for this all-night event that raises much needed funds for the fight against cancer.

"We need people to volunteer to help plan the events that take place during Relay for Life," Kim Puleo, Director of Special Events for the American Cancer Society said. "It doesn't take a lot of time to be a volunteer," she added. "Any time a person can give is valuable."

The consistent theme of Relay for Life is "Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back." The event consists of three parts:

  • Survivor Ceremony: Cancer survivors are celebrated and honored. Survivors do a survivor lap and are then joined by their caregivers for another lap.
  • Luminaria Ceremony: Remember those who lost their battle with cancer. Bags are decorated in memory of a person, filled with sand and lit.
  • Fight Back Ceremony: Discussion on ways people can fight back against cancer.

Volunteers are needed to plan events designed around these three parts, in addition to helping to secure food and entertainment.

Volunteers will be formed into committees that will meet once a month beginning in February.

Tonight's meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria of Gibbs Elementary School, 195 Sutton Place.
