The French Burying Ground
First used in 1677, the French Burying Ground is the final resting place to New Milford's pioneering families.
Upon arriving in New Jersey in 1677, French-Huguenot David Demarest was greeted by the Hackensack and Tappan Indians and immediately set about purchasing a few thousand acres of land building his home in New Milford and making his family one of the first families of record in Bergen County.
Many followed in Demarest's footsteps and played an important role not only in New Milford history, but in the history of Bergen County and are buried right here in the French Cemetery on land that belonged to Demarest and upon which he had built his French Church.
Surveyed in 2002 by New Milford Girl Scout Troop 52, this cemetery is located behind the New Milford Boro Hall. Click here to see some of the tombstone inscriptions.
