Former Catholic School Teacher From Union County Charged With Sex Assault

The 24-year-old history teacher had sexual relations with a 17-year-old student at the Middlesex County school, authorities say.

A Former Catholic history school teacher has been charged with sexually assaulting a 17-year-old student, authorities said.

Fatima Grupico, 24, of Linden was arrested Thursday and charged with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Grupico, who was a history teacher at the now-closed Cardinal McCarrick High School in South Amboy, had sexual relations with the boy at the school on a number of occasions between May 4 and May 30, according to a news release from Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and South Amboy Police Chief Darren LaVigne.

The investigation began after school officials notified police, according to the news release.

Grupico was unemployed after the school closed its doors for good in June, authorities said.

She remains in custody and is waiting for bail to be set.

Detective George Stilwell of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and Detective Matthew Barcheski of the South Amboy Police Department handled the investigation, which is continuing.
