New Providence Man Filmed Stepdaughter In Bathroom: Prosecutor

Esteban Gomez-Barrantes, 34, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and invasion of privacy, authorities said.

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ — A New Providence man was accused of surreptitiously filming his stepdaughter in their bathroom, said acting Union County Prosecutor Lyndsay V. Ruotolo said.

Esteban Gomez-Barrantes, 34, was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and third-degree invasion of privacy, Ruotolo said.

The investigation dates back to June 3 when the victim noticed that her stepfather's cell phone was positioned under pieces of laundry in the bathroom and recording video with an unobstructed view of the room, the acting prosecutor said.

The family contacted police, and the New Providence Police Department and Special Victims Unit of the Union County Prosecutor's Office investigated.

Gomez-Barrantes is due to appear at a detention hearing in Union County Superior Court. He could face between five and 10 years in state prison if convicted of the endangering the welfare of a child charge.
