ABOUT NEW PROVIDENCE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

In 1737, the Rev. John Cleverly was the first pastor to preach to a small group of worshipers on the Colonial frontier in a place called Turkey, New Jersey, so named for the abundance of wild turkeys in the area. The people who gathered there were Puritan pioneers from Elizabeth Town. They built a small log cabin on the corner of what is now Springfield Avenue and South Street and called their fellowship Turkey Christian Church.

During a worship service in a larger log cabin meetinghouse in 1759, a makeshift balcony gave way and all the people in the balcony fell onto the worshippers below. Miraculously, no one was injured. The people saw this as a sign of God’s benevolent protection – God’s providence. To reflect this belief, they changed the church’s name to New Providence Presbyterian Church. Gradually, the area took on the name of the church, and, in 1809, New Providence Township was formed.

NPPC is a church that is “Building a community that seeks to Know, Love and Follow Jesus and Share Him with others.” We conduct spiritually enriching services each Sunday with a Traditional worship service in our Sanctuary at 9 AM and a Contemporary worship service in our Ministry Center at 10:30 AM, along with numerous ministry programs and events throughout the week. You can learn more about us at thecornernj.com. We are a member church of ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians (www.eco-pres.org).
