Pig Roast & Barbeque Open To Community Today, Oct. 1
This 1st annual event will feature an all-you-can-eat buffet from 3 to 7 p.m., rain or shine.
Community members are invited to attend the 1st Annual Pig Roast & Barbeque in the parking lot of this Saturday, Oct. 1.
From 3 to 7 p.m., community members can enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet of food, ranging from roasted pig, hamburgers and hot dogs to macaroni salads, potato salads and desserts, as well as beverages that will include soda, birch beer, water and quarter kegs of beer.
“Hopefully it will be a nice community thing, getting a lot of people out there, and just have fun,” said Jim Johnston, Director of Public Works in New Providence, who is organizing the barbeque with his wife, Debbie, and his sister, Betty Bechberger.

The 60 lbs pig, which will be roasted on premise, is coming from Green Village Packing House near Chatham, while members of the parish’s ministries are making all of the other food.
“Father [Bill Mahon] looked at [the Pig Roast & Barbeque] as he doesn’t care if we make any money — just break even — but bring the community together because it’s for anyone,” said Debbie, who has been organizing the for the last 24 years with Jim.

But any money raised from this community event will go toward the parish’s Academy.
Any members of the community can attend roast, which will be moved from the church’s parking lot into the parish hall in the event of inclement weather. The cost is $20 for adults, ages 18 and up, $15 for senior citizens and children, and free for children under the age of 5.
The Johnston’s said if a family of four or more attends the roast, the price for any children will then be reduced to $5 each.
The Academy of Our Lady of Peace Church is located at 99 South St. in New Providence.
