Pioneers Dominate Truncated Swim Meet

After relocation to Union's pool, both the boys and girls maintain their undefeated titles.

The unbeaten New Providence High School swimming teams were expecting to play host to Union Thursday afternoon at Morris-Union Jointure Commission pool in Warren.

But Union coach Dennis Reinhard told New Providence's Walt Kempner the Farmers wouldn't be able make it on time. So Kempner offered to take the Pioneers to Union and the Farmer's pool at the Union Boys and Girls Club.

The trip resulted in a truncated meet since the Farmers had the pool for a limited time. The Pioneer boys won 57-36, while the girls won 63-38.

"I suggested to postpone it to a later time or just do it at their place,'' Kempner said. "Their coach has been there for a long time and I really like him and I know the guy does a really good job over there."

Freshman Megan Sullivan won the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly. Freshman Laura Charlton finished third in the 100 butterfly. Leslia Olesnyckj dropped down from the distances to the sprints and won the 50 freestyle.

"She swam pretty well. I thought I'd try her in the short sprints,'' Kempner said.

Sophomore Kelly Carroll and senior Julia Kudryashova won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Sullivan, freshman Kim Morecraft and freshman Nelene Dandermerwe swept the 100 freestyle.

The boys were led by sophomore Harry Clewell, who won the 200 IM and senior Lou Murphy, who took the butterfly.

Freshman Stephan Olesnykj, senior Eric Falzgraf and junior Steve Prunesti placed second, third and fourth in the 100 freestyle.

Both New Providence teams are 3-0 with rival Governor Livingston ahead Thursday at Morris/Union.
