Police Still Investigating Strong Armed Robbery at NP Garden Apartment

Victim freed herself, but sustained minor injuries. Intruder described as a 5'7" dark skinned male, 20 to 30 years old. Residents encouraged to call New Providence Police with any information about burglary.

New Providence Police Officers responded to a report on Saturday at 11 p.m. that a burglary had just occurred at a garden apartment complex, located at 851 Springfield Avenue on the Summit border.

Upon their arrival, the victim advised the officers that she had gone out to the parking lot to close her car windows because it had begun raining. When the victim returned to her apartment, an unknown intruder lunged at her throwing her to the floor and a struggle ensued.

The victim reported she was able to free herself from the assailant's grasp, run out her door and began banging on her neighbor's door, who called 9-1-1.

It is believed that the actor entered her apartment from her fire escape through a window she had left ajar and also fled her second floor apartment out the same window and down the fire escape. The window was found to be open further than she had left it.

The victim escaped with only minor injuries and refused medical attention. Patrol officers performed an extensive search of the area with the assistance of Summit police officers with negative results.

Detectives from processed the crime scene and interviewed potential witnesses as well as the victim of this attack. The detectives recovered forensic evidence from this crime scene. The victim reported she only had left her apartment for about two minutes, which indicates the actor was most likely watching the victim.

The actor is described as a dark skinned male between 20 and 30 years old, approximately 5' 7" tall, wearing a black jacket, light colored pants and some type of "beanie type" hat with some facial hair.

This matter will continue to be investigated by the New Providence Detective Bureau. Anyone who may have observed any suspicious persons in proximity to 851 Springfield Avenue Saturday night are requested to call the detectives at (908) 665-1111.
