Release: NPHS Students Participate in Musical Auditions
Students trying out for the NPHS Spring Musical were invited to participate in this audition with a Broadway actress.

On Monday, Sept. 25, New Providence High School students had the opportunity to participate in an audition workshop with Stephanie Kurtzuba. Stephanie currently plays Mum in the Broadway production of Billy Elliot. Her past Broadway credits include The Boy From Oz and Mary Poppins.
Stephanie began by talking to the group about how they viewed themselves: actor, singer or dancer. She quickly got them all on their feet to participate in some acting exercises. Then Stephanie held a Master Class working with three students on how to “act” a song.
Several students had each prepared a piece of music, which they performed with Joe Elefante accompanying on the keyboard. Then Stephanie talked with each student about who they were singing to, what they were trying to say, and had them begin again. The results were noticeably improved, and their classmates rewarded them with huge rounds of applause.

The audition workshop is a part of this year’s preparation for Spring Musical Auditions, which will take place in early October. New Providence High School has chosen to showcase a work by Gilbert & Sullivan: The Pirates of Penzance. Be sure to save the dates: March 16-18 at the NPHS Auditorium.
While you are waiting for the musical, you are invited to see the NPHS fall production, The Miracle Worker, on Nov. 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m.
