1 Dead Following Serious Car Crash Involving NJ Transit Train

Gladstone Branch rail services remains suspended Friday. NJ TRANSIT bus, rail and light rail tickets and passes are being cross-honored.

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ — One person is dead following a serious motor vehicle crash involving a NJ Transit train in New Providence on Thursday night.

At 5:53 p.m. Gladstone Branch line had just left the Murray Hill Train Station when it struck a vehicle at the Union Avenue crossing.

The New Providence Police Department, Fire Department and Rescue Squad responded and found a 2015 Nissan Altima, pinned against a rail road crossing gate pole, New Providence Police report.

The only occupant of the vehicle, an adult female driver, was transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The identity of the victim is being withheld until the next of kin are notified, an NJ Transit spokesman said.

A total of 100 passengers were on the train at the time of the crash. None were injured. The Gladstone Branch is suspended in both directions as a result and passengers were transported via a rescue train, an NJ Transit spokesman said.

The New Providence Fire Department and Union County HAZMAT also responded to the scene as the vehicle had a ruptured gas tank.

The New Jersey Transit Police Department is investigating this collision with the assistance of the New Providence Police Department’s preliminary investigation.
