Low Voter Turnout For U.S. Senate Primary Election

Voter turnout in New Providence, Berkeley Heights and Mountainside for the U.S. Senate Primary Election was fairly low. But according to unofficial results, the same candidates led the polls in each town.

Out of the 4,275 registered New Providence voters, (1,686 registered Democrats and 2,589 registered Republicans), 651 residents, (322 Democrats and 329 Republicans) voted in the Tuesday election. That’s about 15 percent of all registered voters. 

Republican Steven Lonegan led the pack with 242 votes and Democrat Cory Booker followed with 175 votes.

Republican Alieta Eck received with 81 votes, Democrat Rush Holt received 79 votes, Democrat Frank Pallone, Jr. received 60 votes and Democrat Sheila Oliver received 7 votes.

It was a very similar story in Berkeley Heights, as a total of 737 out of the 9,232 registered township voters hit the polls on Tuesday.

Out of the nearly 8 percent of residents that voted, 274 voted for Lonegan, while 166 voted for Booker.

Eck was next with 107 votes, followed by Holt with 105 votes, Pallone, Jr. with 79 votes and Oliver with 6 votes.

In Mountainside, 426 (8.9 percent) of the 4,826 registered voters headed to the polls on Tuesday.

Lonegan and Booker led the polls with 185 votes and 110 votes, respectively.

Holt followed with 47 votes, Eck with 43 votes, Pallone, Jr. with 41 votes and Oliver receiving 0 votes.
