Week in Review: Alex Wu, Car Accidents, Graduation

Here's a roundup of the top news in Berkeley Heights, Mountainside and New Providence this week.

from injuries sustained after a six-story fall from a Connecticut apartment building window. Alex Wu, an 8-year-old student at , was reportedly visiting relatives with his family at Rippowam Manor, a 10-story apartment building located in Stamford, CT. Salt Brook Elementary School sent a letter to all parents on Monday about Alex's death, asking parents to discuss this tragedy with their children and informing parents that counselors would be at the school each day until Wednesday, which was the last day of school, to help students cope with the loss of their classmate.

, reported Berkeley Heights Police. In a release issued Thursday evening, police stated that the accident occurred when Michael D. Miller, 19, of Locust Valley, NY, attempted a left turn on to Willow Way while travelling northeast on Park Avenue, in front of Joseph Tribuna, 50, of Berkeley Heights, who was operating a 2007 Honda and travelling southwest on Park Ave. approaching Willow Way. The crash resulted in serious injuries to Linda Tribuna, 50, of Berkeley Heights and Antoinette Cecere, 79, of Manchester NJ, both of whom were passengers in the Tribuna vehicle. The injured parties were transported by the  to Morristown Memorial Hospital where Antoinette Cecere succumbed to her injuries on June 19. 

Mark Watson, of Berkeley Heights, was recently recognized as the Men’s Saber champion in the 2011-2012 New Jersey Cup fencing competition.  last Saturday at Drew University. The presentation immediately followed the Garden State Games tournament in which he placed first in the Under-19 Men’s Saber event.

On Monday at 7:48 a.m.,  The driver of a silver Mazada, Jessica Diaz, age 22 of Summit, was traveling south on Summit Road when the other vehicle, a red Honda prelude driven by Francisco Jaume of Union, crossed over into the opposite lane, striking the Mazada headon. Two passenger’s in the Diaz vehicle as well as Francisco Jaume were injured. All four individuals were transported to Morristown Memorial hospital with various injuries. The driver of the red Honda, Francisco Jaume, was issued motor vehicle summons for careless driving, bald tires and failing to change his license from another state.

The Berkeley Heights Police Department will host its first annual Police Youth Academy from July 23 to July 27 for grades 9 - 12, and July 30 to August 30 for boys and girls in grades 6 - 8. The Police Youth Academy will provide boys and girls an inside look at local law enforcement.
