Tree Crashes Into Oakland EMS Building

Motorists advised to stay off roadways if possible.

Hurricane Sandy began to wreak havoc late Monday afternoon in Oakland as Mayor Linda Schwager advised motorists to stay off the borough's roadways.

"We have a lot of downed wires and tree branches coming down," she said.

One tree came through the top of the Oakland EMS building Schwager said. Schwager, who said she was without power at her own home, said 11 trees had come down in the borough by 5 p.m.

In another part of the borough, Schwager said a chimney came loose off a residence and crashed into a home across the street.

Schwager said Department of Public Works employees and police officers were working diligently to clear the roads.

Some roads were closed Monday afternoon because of downed wires and trees, she said. Those roads included Oak Street, by Route 202 and Walnut Street, and Breakneck Road, where several power outages were reported. Schwager said it appeared as though something had fallen on the power line on Breakneck, although she was not sure what.

"That could possibly be from the trees down, it's happening all around town," she said.

Schwager said not many power outages had been reported Monday.
