UPDATE: Special Meeting Announced by Mayor and Council

In an attempt to lower the introduced 2013 municipal budget the Borough of Oakland's Governing Body plans to amend the budget by lowering spending.

The Oakland Mayor and Council have announced a special meeting to be held in the Borough Hall Conference Room on Monday at 5:00 p.m.

The meeting was scheduled on short notice to notify the public of the governing body’s plan to amend the introduced 2013 municipal budget.

"The amendment would include $5,000 in additional funding for the First Aid Squad, additional funding needed to award a bid for a new fire truck, more money for our required social security payments and the cash match needed to undertake accreditation for our Police Department," said Borough Administrator Richard Kunze.

Monday's meeting has been scheduled to make the public aware of the changes and to schedule a public hearing on the budget.

“We would be decreasing our Health Benefits budget by $110,000 and some additional surplus funding would also be utilized,” added Kunze.

If you are unclear on the workings of the 2013 budget and want to be informed before the budget is voted on attending this meeting is advised.

“If we can lower the budget we can lower the amount of taxes per household,” said Oakland Mayor Linda Schwager. “We will look to see if we can reduce some of the expenses. There is a set amount of income that we can collect so it is the spending side that we are trying to look at.”

After Monday the borough’s governing body will meet on April 24. At that meeting the Mayor and Council plan on holding a public hearing on the amended budget, amending the budget and adopting it.
