16-Year-Old Cape May Lifeguard Injured After Boat Accident

A 16-year-old lifeguard was knocked unconscious after his patrol boat capsized in rough seas on Thursday, authorities said.

CAPE MAY, NJ — A first-year Cape May lifeguard is in critical condition after his patrol boat capsized in rough seas on Thursday, authorities said.

The 16-year-old was rowing off Philadelphia Avenue at about 11 a.m. when the boat was hit by a wave and flipped over, knocking the lifeguard unconscious, according to City Manager Michael J. Voll.

Fellow lifeguards responded immediately to his aid.

He was then taken to Cape Regional Medical Center and airlifted to Cooper University Hospital in Camden the trauma center Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

The teen lifeguard was in critical condition on Friday.
