Dear Friends,Â

At the beginning of February, I posted a letter expressing the city’s concerns regarding FEMA’s new Advisory Base Flood Elevation maps. I wanted to provide an update on the city’s actions since early February.  Â
The city has now developed a specific customer-service team dedicated to assisting with questions about flood maps, FEMA and storm assistance. Beginning later next week, we will have an employee staffed during regular business hours to field questions and offer guidance, as well as a consultant, who is an engineer and planner, assisting with these calls.

This consultant is well-versed in land use and the city’s ordinances. We are hopeful that these employees can assist residents, businesses and local contractors with navigating the recent changes to base flood elevation maps and the impact on local ordinances.  Â
City Council did award a contract to the coastal engineering consulting firm Atkins at their Feb. 14 meeting. City staff has begun meeting with Atkins representatives to initiate the approach with FEMA in order to correct the inaccuracies on the recently issued flood maps.Â
We are optimistic that there will be changes to the maps, so I would also like to remind you that, if you can, please take your time and do not rush construction decisions. I would also like to remind you to that it is imperative that you contact a professional when developing a course of action.
Our local architects, engineers and construction professionals are familiar with local regulations and requirements, and are knowledgeable about the new maps. Â
Lastly, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact City Hall at 399-6111, or the new City Customer Care team directly at 609-525-9404. Â
Warm regards, Â
Jay A. Gillian
Mayor
