Police Chase Stolen Oil Tanker To Jersey Shore Wawa

WILDWOOD, NJ — A Camden County woman faces charges after driving a stolen tanker truck over 80 miles away and refusing to cooperate with officers, police said Tuesday.

Wildwood police responded to the Wawa on West Rio Grande Avenue for a report of an erratic driver operating a Taylor Oil Tanker Truck around 8:30 p.m.

Camille Wescott, 44, of Lawnside, parked near the gas pumps. Before officers approached the vehicle, the vehicle registration was provided to Wildwood Police Communications and officers found the vehicle was reported stolen from Bellmawr.

As officers conducted a high-risk stop, Wescott refused to comply with the officer's commands and would not exit the vehicle, police said.

On several occasions, Wescott pressed on the brake pedal and checked her mirrors as if she was attempting to pull the vehicle out but she was unable to restart the tanker truck. The driver and passenger side doors were locked while she refused to exit the vehicle, police said.

For public safety concerns and fear that the commercial oil truck would travel back onto the highly congested public road, police forced entry into the vehicle, removed Wescott from the vehicle and took her into custody without further incident, police said.

An investigation found that Wescott stole the Taylor Oil Tanker Truck around 12:30 p.m. Wescott was involved in several vehicle pursuits with several different law enforcement agencies and accidents in multiple jurisdictions, according to Wildwood police.

Wildwood police charged Wescott with receiving stolen property, obstruction and resisting arrest. She was turned over to Bellmawr police. She also faces charges in Bellmawr, from State Police and elsewhere, NJ.com reports.
