Woman Run Over By Officer While Sunbathing On Wildwood Beach: Reports

Good Samaritans had to dig the woman out from under the vehicle, the reports said.

WILDWOOD, NJ — Authorities are investigating an incident where a woman was run over by a Wildwood police officer while she was sunbathing on the beach last week, according to reports.

The incident happened near Rio Grande Avenue about 3:30 p.m. Aug. 28 when the officer was responding to an unspecified ordinance violation, the Press of Atlantic City reported, quoting Police Chief Joseph Murphy.

The woman was lying on a towel on the beach and was pinned under the truck, a witness told NJ.com. The witness said other witnesses jumped in to help right away, digging and lifting the truck to free the woman, the report said.

She suffered broken ribs, three fractured vertebrae and a lung injury but was expected to survive, 6ABC reported. She had not been identified.

Wildwood police told NJ.com the incident was being investigated by its internal affairs division.

Messages seeking updated information from the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office and the Wildwood Police Department were not answered Monday afternoon.
