📰 News we're reading

1. Family With 3 Boys 'Lost Everything' In Bergen County Fire (patch.com) — Paramus neighbors are rallying around a family of five who lost their Spring Valley Road home in a fast-moving New Year’s Day fire. With the house uninhabitable, local firefighters have paused physical donations and are directing support to an online fundraiser that’s already raised most of its goal to help the parents and their three young boys start over.

2. Lawsuit Tries To Block Costco From Paramus, Mayor Has Choice Words For The Guy Who Filed It (dailyvoice.com) — A new lawsuit aims to overturn Paramus Planning Board approvals for a large Costco warehouse and tire center on Route 17, potentially delaying the project. Filed by a nearby property owner, the case claims zoning variances and public notice were mishandled, while the mayor strongly defends the board’s decision and calls Costco an important economic addition for the borough.

3. Paramus Mayor Speaks on Affordable Housing Agreement (tapinto.net) — Paramus officials have reached a settlement with Fair Share Housing that sharply reduces the borough’s state-mandated affordable housing obligation, which they say will limit future high-density development. The agreement, stemming from a 2025 court order, is headed to a Mount Laurel judge for compliance certification and follows years of local opposition to large-scale housing mandates.

4. NJ flu cases doubling from last year. How are ERs responding? (northjersey.com) — Paramus residents should know The Valley Hospital’s ER has been so overwhelmed by flu cases that it briefly turned away ambulances this week. A fast-spreading H3N2 flu variant and low vaccination rates are driving record statewide cases, and doctors urge people to get vaccinated now to reduce severe illness and relieve pressure on local hospitals.

5. Man in wheelchair charged with shoplifting $13,000 in perfume, hats, and lenses (palivingnews.com) — Police say two Bronx men used a wheelchair to disguise an attempted theft of perfume and hats from Nordstrom at Paramus Park Mall, leading to their arrest. Officers also linked one suspect to a separate, earlier $12,000 prescription lens theft at the mall, underscoring ongoing shoplifting concerns at this busy Paramus shopping hub.
