Fundraiser Launched For Morris Man Attacked By Bear

Family hopes to raise $10,000 for medical expenses.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. – Chris Petronino has been known for years to help others. And now others are banding together to help him.

The Boonton man and Scoutmaster encountered a bear back in December when he took a look inside a cave during a hike in Rockaway Township. What he didn’t expect was a black bear to be inside, which in turn defended its territory and attacked Petronino.

As a result, Petronino suffered lacerations to his head, shoulders, and legs, and needed to be airlifted to Morristown Medical Center for treatment. After his hospital stay, Petronino was admitted to a sub-acute facility. In total, he was treated away from home for 21 days.

Petronino is home now, and the family is looking for help with expenses for ongoing treatments to assist with wound care, often not covered by health insurance.

A GoFundMe page was created Wednesday, Jan. 13, with a goal of $10,000. In 24 hours, 50 donors have raised more than half the goal, amassing $5,615.
