Update On Police Presence In Point Pleasant Beach (VIDEO)
UPDATE: Point Beach's mayor provided an update. People were asked to stay away from the boardwalk. A video showed police at the gathering.

POINT PLEASANT BEACH – Police responded to large gathering on the beach on Tuesday that officials say was a "clear violation" of social distancing requirements amid the coronavirus outbreak. A video showed people and masked police officers on the beach (see video below).
On Wednesday, Point Pleasant Beach's mayor responded to Tuesday's gathering, saying that the community spent much of the night cleaning up the beach. Read more: Point Pleasant Beach Mayor: 'Town Was Treated Like Toilet'
Mayor Paul Kanitra said there was a large unannounced party on the beach between 7 and 9 p.m. and in boardwalk area, calling it "a clear violation of social distancing requirements."

"As a result of this situation, law enforcement personnel have been called in from neighboring towns to ensure a calm and orderly dispersement of the crowd," he said.
At 9 p.m., Kanitra said he anticipated "a full resolution over the next few hours."

"To quell unfounded rumors, there have so far been no arrests made and no protests ongoing," he said.
On Tuesday night, police asked people to stay away from the boardwalk as law enforcement addressed the situation.

Witnesses said they saw police heading to the boardwalk, and there were people dancing.

Residents called for others to go the beach on Wednesday and pick up what was left behind.


Mark Doyle, who has taken pictures for Patch, said there were people and police still at the boardwalk around 10 p.m.
